Washtenaw County, Mich., to Implement Mobile Government Services

"The use of mobile technology will allow our county staff to maximize their time in the field, provide faster inspection results to citizens and customers, and improve efficiency of permitting, inspection and billing activities."

Washtenaw County, Mich., selected Accela Wireless, a software application that facilitates direct, real-time access to data in an agency's database from a mobile device in the field, to be implemented in the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control program in the Development Services Division. Soil Erosion provides enforcement of state and local requirements for the proper control of earth-moving activities to prevent water pollution from construction sites. The county hopes to quickly expand the use of Accela Wireless to its building inspection program also.

Washtenaw County has been using Accela for several years to centralize and automate its land and permit management activities. With the addition of Accela Wireless, the Development Services Division will power inspection teams with mobile technology to shift their daily tasks from the office to the field. Inspectors will be equipped with portable devices (e.g. laptops, PDAs, etc.) that allow them to remotely access permit-related data. While in the field, inspectors will input their inspection results and the information will be uploaded to the agency database in real-time. The application also offers an offline mode that can be used when wireless coverage is unavailable; updates are saved to the inspector's mobile device and uploaded to the agency database once a connection is reestablished or when the inspector returns to the office.

"The use of mobile technology will allow our county staff to maximize their time in the field, provide faster inspection results to citizens and customers, and improve efficiency of permitting, inspection and billing activities," stated Dan Myers, Director of Development Services at Washtenaw County.

"We are excited that Washtenaw county has decided to add powerful mobile technology to their Accela system," states Robert P. Lee, Accela's president and CEO. "By streamlining the inspection process and giving field inspectors convenient access to enterprise data, the county will be able to respond more quickly to requests and provide a higher level of service to its citizens."
