BRIEF: FEMA Postpones Emergency Notification Test

The test was originally planned for Sept. 20 but will be pushed back until Oct. 3.

(TNS) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), announced Monday it has postponed the nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) from Thursday, Sept. 20, to Oct. 3, due to ongoing response efforts to Hurricane Florence.

The test, set to be the first nationwide alert of its kind, will assess the operational readiness of the emergency infrastructure for distribution of a national message and determine if technological improvements are needed. The test now set for next month will be conducted in conjunction with radio, television, and cable operators in all U.S. states, territories and tribal lands, and the WEA test will take place in coordination with wireless providers.
