Colorado Cities Solve Public Safety Network Interoperability Issues

Software helps city police in three cities stay connected to their departments on the road and improves officer effectiveness

The cities' of Lakewood, Greenwood Village and Westminster police departments have implemented TotalRoam(R) mobile data software from Padcom. The three public safety agencies in the metro-Denver area have a combined total of over 500 patrol officers.

The City of Lakewood Police Department now uses a combination of two commercially available carrier signals in addition to their own 802.11 (Wi-Fi) hotspots to extend their data network to wirelessly cover the city's 47-square miles. Lakewood leverages a fourth radio frequency (RF) network as a backup. The software allows Lakewood's 270 patrol officers to continuously access car-to-dispatch and car-to-car messaging. Since its initial implementation, the department has experienced improvements in stolen vehicle recovery and apprehension of suspected felons and warrant violators.

The city of Greenwood Village selected TotalRoam Connect through Padcom's Proud to Serve program, a free, limited-time, cellular digital packet data (CDPD) transition software offer that included mobile VPN security and optimization over a single network. Following the promotional download and installation, the department chose to enhance the capabilities of their wireless network by upgrading to TotalRoam MVN. The software now provides roaming capabilities to allow the integration 802.11b (Wi-Fi) into their existing wide-area network.
