In March 2005, Palm Beach County installed a Motorola Printrak Biometric Identification Solution (Printrak BIS) to help law enforcement officials solve more crimes and more accurately track and identify criminals. The Printrak BIS solution allows law enforcement officers to easily enter, search, match, identify and verify fingerprints, palmprints, mugshots, signatures and case records. It also enables Palm Beach County officials to access and input into a larger, statewide criminal database.
"We invested $1.1 million in fingerprint and palmprint technology to help keep our community safe. We've been a Motorola customer for the past 16 years, and we believe in its biometric solutions. The fingerprint database has grown to over 270,000 records, and we're constantly adding more records, which increases our chances to solve crimes and close cases," stated Mark L. McDonald, AFIS supervisor of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. He added that of the 75 additional crimes that have been solved to date, the majority have been burglaries. Palm Beach County is located in the Southern region of Florida and has more than 1.2 million residents.
The Motorola Printrak BIS solution interfaces directly to the statewide Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) biometric system, which is also provided by Motorola. The communications interface between the Palm Beach County and Florida state biometric databases helps ensure that law enforcement officers who are working on cases across borders or jurisdictions have access to vital criminal information such as fingerprints and palmprints, and are able to share them quickly and accurately across agencies to help build evidence and solve crimes.
