Gov. Blunt Commends Dept. of Public Safety

Technology improvements saves thousands at DPS

Gov. Matt Blunt's executive departments continue to find ways to save taxpayers dollars as he commended the Department of Public Safety (DPS) today for implementing technological advances and smart money management.

"These changes will enhance community service, and I commend the Department of Public Safety for constantly rethinking approaches to running state government in an effort to reduce costs for tax paying Missourians," Blunt said.

The Division of Fire Safety maximized the use of technology by posting all newsletters, product safety alerts, fire safety public education announcements, training applications, job opportunities, and other important information on the division's Internet site. Previously, this information could only be attained through the mail. The move has reduced mailing and printing costs by 20 to 25 percent.

The Missouri State Water Patrol replaced an outdated computer system, used for collecting arrest information, in-house as opposed to outsourcing the project and saved the state $200,000. They saved another $175,000 with the completion of a computer-enhanced dispatch system to aid patrolmen while on the waters.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol placed the Patrol News on their Internet site in full color and stopped mailing and printing the hard copies to media, which will save $500 a year.
