The Governor also announced today that he was working with the Legislature to allow the state to enter into a compact with New York to provide additional security measures for other joint mass transit entities.
The letter Governor Corzine sent to Adjutant General Major General Rieth authorizing the National Guard to deploy personnel and supporting equipment is below.
Dear Adjutant General Rieth:
The National Guard's assistance is currently desirable to work in cooperative operation with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to secure the New Jersey Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) facilities.
Effective May 11, 2007, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 38A:3-6.1, I hereby direct you to order to active duty such members of the New Jersey National Guard that, in your judgment, are necessary to provide assistance at the PATH facilities in New Jersey, in order to guard against threats or dangers to the public health, safety and welfare. I further direct you to authorize the employment of any supporting vehicles, equipment, communications or supplies as may be necessary to support the members so ordered.
The protection of our citizens is always the paramount interest of the State. I appreciate your efforts, those of other State and local actors, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, to further the safety and security of our State.
Sincerely,
Jon S. Corzine
Governor
