Hawai'i Governor Releases Funds to Install Emergency Phones

Solar powered phones will increase security and emergency services along scenic highway

To improve traffic safety along Hana Highway on Maui, Hawai'i Governor Linda Lingle has released $85,600 in state funds to install emergency telephones from Kaupakalua Road to Ua Kea Road. This project will also receive $342,400 in federal funds.

"The road to Hana is known around the world for its scenery, but it is also prone to traffic congestion due to stalled vehicles, and personal cellular phone service may be unavailable in certain areas," Governor Lingle said. "Installing solar-powered, roadside phones will improve emergency services so motorists have a greater sense of security when traveling along these beautiful yet remote stretches of highway."

Thirteen state-of-the-art cellular and landline phones, that meet current guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act, will be installed at two-mile intervals along Hana Highway. They will supplement four emergency phones previously installed on the highway. The construction project is scheduled to be completed by June 2007.
