Irvine Police Department Awards Public Safety Wireless Contract
"More real-time information and data will allow Irvine officers to respond safer and more effectively to an incident."
The Irvine, Calif., Police Department selected NextPhase Wireless Inc. to build and support a wireless broadband network operating on the new 4.9 GHz spectrum specifically designated by the FCC for public safety, emergency management and homeland security applications. According to Irvine Police Chief David L. Maggard Jr., "We have worked very hard to extend and enhance our department's legacy of excellence in public safety, and have always looked to innovative technologies to help us work smarter and serve our community more effectively. We are very pleased to be partnering with NextPhase Wireless to deploy this new communication tool. More real-time information and data will allow Irvine officers to respond safer and more effectively to an incident." Funded by a federal grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the new wireless 4.9 GHz network to be deployed by NextPhase will be initially used to provide improved security, throughput and reliability for wireless transmission of voice, video and data from IP surveillance cameras, mobile and fixed radio communications systems and the Internet to and from IPD's new Mobile Command and Communications Vehicle. Operating as a companion to the Department's current Mobile Command Center, these high-tech vehicles will serve as critical field operations centers in the event of an emergency or catastrophic event, including major traffic collisions, aircraft crashes, hazardous material spills, major crime scenes, crimes in progress and natural disasters, among others.
