League City, Texas, Boosts Emergency Response Plan

Satellite communications system a help in emergencies

The city of League City, Texas, will launch a test program utilizing Eagle Broadband Inc.'s SatMAX advanced satellite communications technology to boost the city's emergency response program. The SatMAX system enables customers to quickly and easily transmit reliable, fully wireless, voice and data communications from any indoor or outdoor location.

Historically, satellite phones had to be within line-of-sight access to orbiting satellites in order to operate effectively. SatMAX, which is comprised of a fixed or mobile unit and accompanying handsets, eliminates that need by connecting to an Iridium-based, global satellite network. As a result, emergency responders have access to dependable and uninterrupted communication from any location during emergency situations.

City Administrator Chuck Pinto said that with its location along the Texas Gulf Coast, League City is one of many cities susceptible to hurricanes and tropical storms. "With the type of emergencies we have experienced over the last several years, having an emergency plan and reliable communications is our highest priority," Pinto said. "In updating our current emergency plan, we realized satellite communications is the ultimate need because of its technological capabilities and reliability ... We are confident it will help us take a lead role in better protecting and serving the residents of League City and Galveston County in any emergency situation, whether manmade or an act of Mother Nature."
