Mayor's Vision to Improve Public Safety in Cleveland, Ohio

Mayor Frank Jackson's message on safety.

The City of Cleveland has a plan for public safety - a plan that I was calling for before becoming Mayor in 2006. In 2003 and 2004 as Council President, I demanded an improved police deployment plan - something I addressed again with Chief Michael McGrath in December 2005 as I prepared to become Mayor of the City of Cleveland in January 2006. Said Jackson, "Despite a 32.41% increase in crime between 2000 and 2006, I, as the Mayor of Cleveland, willingly took on the responsibility for reversing that trend. I know what public safety challenges we face; and together, we will overcome them.

"Our front line in this fight is the Division of Police. These men and women are fighting both the criminals and the public's perception everyday. They routinely step into harm's way and take risks that most would run from. They are doing an outstanding job. They have my full support and I look forward to continuing to work with them to improve safety in our City. Our community expects it and deserves it. "
