New York Assembly Says No to Public Information Limits

Gov. Pataki and the Republican-led Senate say the bill is needed to keep data out of the hands of terrorists.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Democrat-controlled Assembly is unlikely to consider a new law championed by Republican Gov. George Pataki that would limit the public's access to government records in the post-Sept. 11 era, lawmakers said Monday.

"The proposal is dead as it stands right now,' said Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito, an Oneida County Democrat who chairs the Government Operations Committee. "We believe the existing law has all of the protections needed for safeguarding the public's health and safety.'
