Ottawa Police to Offer Crime Data Online

Online crime reporting tool aggregates data from police reporting mechanisms and puts it into a highly visual, easy-to-read, searchable map.

Daily updates will include frequency and type of criminal activity such as robberies, stolen vehicles, mischief and the location of traffic complaints.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has signed a contract with CrimeReports.com to provide real-time crime information to residents via the Internet.  Daily updates will include frequency and type of criminal activity such as robberies, stolen vehicles, mischief and the location of traffic complaints.

CrimeReports.com, in partnership with a police agency, gathers information from varied police reporting mechanisms and puts it into a highly visual, easy-to-read, searchable map. From this map, the public is able to access real-time information regarding events occurring in their own neighborhood. The site is free to the public and also allows users to receive customized email notifications when crime happens near home or work.

"CrimeReports.com allows Ottawa Police to provide our citizens with valuable information via the internet that would otherwise be difficult, if not impossible to communicate," said Randy Mar, Director of Corporate Planning with the Ottawa Police Service. "As our citizens become familiar with this new information they will better understand what is going on in their neighbourhood and how to stay alert and stay informed."
