On April 6, 1987, the PSC department's staff answered the first 9-1-1 call in Plano, said the city in a release. That first year they were capable of answering only two incoming 911 calls at a time. Twenty years later, they handle calls for over 250,000 residents and are still the city's first "First Responders." Public Safety Communications Department employees answer hundreds of emergency and non-emergency calls each day dispatching for Police, Fire and EMS services. Technology has changed over the last 20 years, but the Plano PSC philosophy is still the same: "We Help People!"
The open house will also serve as the kick-off for a week-long celebration, April 8-14, for National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. This annual observance is sponsored by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International and honors the thousands of men and women who respond to emergency calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to the world's citizens.
