Plano, Texas, Public Safety Communications Department Celebrates 20 Years of 911 Service

Kicks off Public Safety Telecommunications Week.

The City of Plano's Public Safety Communications Department (PSC) will celebrate 20 years of dedicated 911 service with an open house today in the Municipal Center.

On April 6, 1987, the PSC department's staff answered the first 9-1-1 call in Plano, said the city in a release. That first year they were capable of answering only two incoming 911 calls at a time. Twenty years later, they handle calls for over 250,000 residents and are still the city's first "First Responders." Public Safety Communications Department employees answer hundreds of emergency and non-emergency calls each day dispatching for Police, Fire and EMS services. Technology has changed over the last 20 years, but the Plano PSC philosophy is still the same: "We Help People!"

The open house will also serve as the kick-off for a week-long celebration, April 8-14, for National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. This annual observance is sponsored by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International and honors the thousands of men and women who respond to emergency calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to the world's citizens.
