South Dakota Homeland Security Director Retiring

Berheim served as the director of both the Office of Emergency Management and the Office of Homeland Security as part of a 35-year career in public safety.

John Berheim, Director of South Dakota's Office of Homeland Security, is retiring this month. Berheim has held the post since the establishment of the state's Office of Homeland Security in 2003.

"John has worked in the state's public safety arena for more than 35 years. I worked with John when he was a State Trooper, the Emergency Management Director, and as our Director of Homeland Security. He has done a great job for South Dakota and we will miss him. His retirement is well-earned, and we wish him the best," said Public Safety Secretary, Tom Dravland.

Berheim spent 22 years with the Highway Patrol, working as a trooper in Plankinton, Sioux Falls, and Pierre and eventually as a district commander. In the late 1990s, Berheim was appointed Director of the Office of Emergency Management. He stayed at the post until being appointed Director of the Office of Homeland Security. Berheim also spent more than 35 years with the US Military.

Berheim's retirement is effective Nov. 21, 2008. His replacement has not yet been named.
