Successful Digital Messaging System in Mississippi Test

System demonstrated live interoperability by delivering text messages via FM radio signals

Global Security Systems (GSS) announced the successful test of its Mississippi statewide emergency alert network, designed and delivered under contract to the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security. During a test of the FEMA DEAS (digital emergency alert system), driven out of Virginia, the GSS system demonstrated live interoperability by delivering EAS text messages via FM radio signals (through Mississippi Public Broadcasting and private FM networks) to the cell phones of test participants in Jackson.

"The statewide alert system that GSS developed for our state is the first of its kind in the country, and we're tremendously pleased with the performance of the system when put to the test," said Senator Trent Lott. "Effective communications sit at the heart of disaster preparedness, and establishing a reliable emergency alert network has been a priority for our state. With the technology provided by GSS, we're able to reduce our vulnerability in times of crisis and mobilize resources to help ensure the safety of our citizens."

GSS developed a single-point to multipoint messaging system to provide redundant distribution of emergency alert messages in the event that responders' radios and cell phones become clogged with traffic or ineffective due to heavy network use. The company uses a standard commercial FM receiver chip that can be inserted into pagers, smoke detectors, cell phones, PDAs, and other like devices to alert responders and provide vital information as a situation develops.
