The SENTRI program, or Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection, was first implemented at the Otay Mesa passenger port in 1995 and at the San Ysidro facility in 2000. More than 90,000 travelers from both sides of the border are currently registered in the vehicle SENTRI program in the San Diego/Tijuana and Imperial/Mexicali regions. Members register to participate by providing advance identification information and receive expedited service by CBP.
SENTRI lane hours of operation at Calexico will be extended by as much as two or three hours earlier or later during busiest times.
"We are very pleased to increase the hours of operation of the SENTRI lane in response to the tremendous growth of the program," said CBP Calexico Port Director Billy Whitford. "We believe the expanded hours of operation will offer greater convenience for SENTRI participants and will encourage other regular commuters to enroll in the program."
Almost 9,000 cross-border travelers have registered for the program in Imperial County since the SENTRI lane opened in December 2005. CBP officers at the downtown Calexico port processed over 218,000 SENTRI entries during fiscal 2006 and over 149,000 entries during the first quarter of fiscal 2007. The federal fiscal year began on October 1, 2006.
