(TNS) — There are resources and services available for crime victims but they don’t always know they exist or how to access them.

That may soon change.

A new crime victim rights webpage launched by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel aims to educate crime victims of their rights and guide them through the legal process after a crime is reported.

“Ensuring crime victims have access to the support and information they need is one of my main goals as Michigan’s Attorney General,” Nessel said, in Friday’s news release. “The crime victim eights webpage will serve as a vital tool in empowering victims to report crimes, connecting them with resources, and guiding them through the legal process.”

Provided on the webpage is a comprehensive guide to critical information for those affected by a crime.”

Among Macomb County’s crime victim advocates applauding the initiative to help educate survivors is Sharman Davenport, executive director of Turning Point, a nonprofit that provides shelter, services and programming for survivors of violent crimes.

“The criminal justice process can be overwhelming, especially while navigating the trauma of having experienced domestic violence, sexual violence, or human trafficking. Survivors often share how difficult it is to know what to expect, what the process should look like, and what control or opportunities they have to advocate for their voice and needs,” said Davenport, who has worked with Nessel’s office on other initiatives. “The Office of the Attorney General’s actions help to empower survivors with accessible information and the steps of these cases so they can prepare, plan for their safety, and advocate for their rights within the process. I have no doubt that this will become a vital resource for survivors, their support systems, and advocates within our community.”

The Crime Victim Rights webpage includes:

• A list of victims’ rights;

• Statewide victim support services and resources within the Department of Attorney General;

• Information on crime victim compensation;

• Guidance on victim advocates services; and

• An overview of the legal process for felony and misdemeanor cases.

The newly-launched webpage will also be linked to Macomb County’s victim rights page.

“By linking to this webpage, we are reinforcing our mutual commitment to helping victims navigate the legal system and rebuild their lives,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido, whose office has initiated several of its own initiatives to help crime victims, including a new text messaging service integrated with a modern case management system.

This service allows victims to receive timely hearing notices, case updates and access services more efficiently.

“Our goal has always been to uplift crime victims by providing them with the services and support they need during some of their toughest moments,” Lucido said. “We have talented victim advocates utilizing modern technology to achieve real results.”
