Back in December of 2020, Uber announced that it would be giving 10 million free or discounted rides to people who needed transportation to their COVID-19 vaccine appointments. Now, the company is taking these efforts a step further with a new Vaccine Access Fund.

Launched in partnership with PayPal and Walgreens, the fund will be used to pay for people’s rides to their vaccination appointments. According to the American Public Transportation Association, nearly half of Americans don’t have reliable access to public transportation, making it difficult for many to get to a vaccination site. The three companies are donating $11 million to the fund to get it going, but Uber is looking to its customers to help out. Through a new feature supported by PayPal Giving Fund in the Uber or Uber Eats app, anyone can donate.

The money in the Vaccine Access Fund will be managed by Local Initiatives Support Corporation, which will work with community nonprofits and other partners to set up rides for people who need them.
