It seems there’s no end to how far scammers will go to try and capitalize on the COVID-19 pandemic. Google recently released its 2020 Ads Safety Report, which notes, among other things, how many ads were blocked in 2020 and what they were about.

The company reports blocking and removing a total of 3.1 billion ads last year. Of those, 99 million were fake ads about the coronavirus. The topics of these ads ranged from fake N95 masks to miracle cures to bogus vaccine doses.

The company also noted in a blog post about the data what it will be doing to continue and improve the work to counteract these ads going forward. In addition to new programs and policies, the company will be improving its human and automated detecting processes, as well as investing in new coordination technology.

“In the upcoming year, we will continue to invest in policies, our team of experts and enforcement technology to stay ahead of potential threats,” said Scott Spencer, the company’s vice president of Ads Privacy and Safety, in the blog post. “We also remain steadfast on our path to scale our verification programs around the world in order to increase transparency and make more information about the ad experience universally available.”
