Is it legal to decorate a car with Christmas lights in Canada?

Answer: You’ll probably end up with a ticket.

There’s no denying we could all use a little extra holiday cheer this year, but one motorist in Canada may have taken it a little too far.

Last week, the Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police pulled over a Tesla Model 3 that was covered with Christmas lights. According to a tweet from the department, the lights were duct taped all over the vehicle. And while they definitely looked fun and festive, they unfortunately earned the driver a ticket for a traffic violation.

“Please don't do this, it can be dangerous if they fall off in traffic, never mind the distraction,” said the police department’s tweet. Though it happened in Canada, a driver doing this in the U.S. would be met with the same result. Go crazy with your Christmas lights, just at home and not on your car.

Last night a Traffic Section officer stopped this Tesla near Kingsway and McMurray. The lights were duct taped to the vehicle. Please don’t do this, it can be dangerous if they fall off in traffic, never mind the distraction. A violation ticket was issued.#BurnabyFrontline pic.twitter.com/dlpIGVO6Le — Burnaby RCMP (@BurnabyRCMP) December 3, 2020
