What type of personal data does the Roomba robot vacuum collect?

Answer: maps of your home

That’s right. While that Wi-Fi-connected Roomba was scooting from room to room cleaning up your messes, it was also collecting data about the layout of your home. And iRobot CEO Colin Angle sees huge potential in home robots helping to enable the smart home of the future, and the devices within.

When used in conjunction with personal assistant devices, like the Amazon Alexa or the upcoming Apple HomePod speaker, the robot vacuum CEO said the data could be extremely valuable. The data, however, will not be sold, nor will it be shared without permission, The Verge reports.

Editor's note: This story was updated on 7/28/2017 at 3:48 p.m. to reflect that iRobot will not sell its users personal data.
