Why does Germany have to pay Microsoft more than $800K?

Answer: Because it didn’t upgrade from Windows 7 in time.

It’s been just over one week since Microsoft officially ended services for its Windows 7 operating system, meaning the company is no longer providing updates like critical security patches. This does not mean that someone must stop using Windows 7 on their computer, it just means that they do so at their own risk. In certain cases, however, Microsoft will continue to provide security updates to Windows 7 users at a price.

That is why the government of Germany will be shelling out U.S. $887,000 to Microsoft this year. According to Engadget, there are still about 33,000 computers in the country’s federal ministry that have not been upgraded to Windows 10. For $50 per machine, Microsoft will continue its security updates to those computers for one year. After that, the price will go up each year, so hopefully the country will be able to get all the computers upgraded by that time.
