Wednesday’s launch, which was delayed by almost a week due to bad weather, was largely a success. The satellites, ensconced aboard one of the company’s Falcon 9 rockets, safely made it to orbit about an hour after liftoff. The rocket was able to return itself to earth and land aboard one of the company’s drone ships, as it has done twice before.
SpaceX was also able to retrieve one of the two halves of the fairings, or the nose cone on top of the rocket that houses the satellites. Once in space, the cone broke in half and returned to Earth as planned. However, while one was caught by a drone ship, the other just slightly missed its mark and sank. The company has yet to recover both fairings in any of its launches.
