Which major convenience store is going cashierless?

Answer: 7-Eleven.

It will still be a while yet before the 7-Eleven down the street from you ditches its cashiers, but one day it could happen. A 7-Eleven store in Irving, Texas, is trialing cashierless technology this year. Customers must download the app first, and then the store will use algorithms and “predictive technology” to keep track of what each person is picking up. Once they leave the store, their account will be charged and they will receive a detailed digital receipt.

Since it is still in the trial phase, the store will only be open to 7-Eleven employees. This allows the company to conduct the trial while collecting detailed, useful feedback, which is something they say has worked well for them in the past.

“Introducing new store technology to 7-Eleven employees first has proven to be a very productive way to test and learn before launching to a wider audience,” said 7-Eleven Senior Vice President Mani Suri. “This in-house, custom built technology by 7-Eleven engineers is designed for our current and future customers.”
