How can you explore the surface of Mars without leaving Earth?

Answer: With NASA’s 1.8-billion-pixel image from the Curiosity rover.

Mars has long made headlines as the next frontier of space exploration. In recent years, SpaceX founder Elon Musk has framed sending humans to the Red Planet as a priority for his efforts outside Earth’s orbit. And while setting foot on Mars might still be a long way off for most people, the Curiosity rover has now sent back the highest-resolution footage taken of the planet since it landed there in 2012.

A 2 GB panoramic image taken over four days comprises 1,200 images taken last November and contains almost 1.8 billion pixels, meaning viewers can zoom far into the distance to get a sense of the planet’s surface, Engadget reports. NASA has also made available a video of the image, allowing for a 360-degree view of what it looks like on Mars.
