In an interview with Reuters published Friday, the former Democratic congressman revealed his connection to the Cult of the Dead Cow (CDC) one of the earliest influential hacking groups in the U.S. He was apparently a member in the 1980s and stopped participating in 1991 when he started college.
According to CNET, Reuters reported that the CDC at the time of O’Rourke’s membership was “more about writing than it was about breaking into computer systems.” The presidential candidate wrote a number of articles at the time under the screen name Psychedelic Warlord and credits what he learned from the CDC with influencing his stance on today’s net neutrality debate.
