How easy is it to find cybercriminals operating on Facebook?

Answer: Very easy.

In the past few months, researchers at cybersecurity firm Talos have been combing Facebook for evidence of users committing various acts of cybercrime. In that time, Talos found 385,000 users across 74 groups committing nefarious acts like stealing account credentials and selling spamming tools and stolen bank and credit card information.

The researchers reported the groups for abuse, and by working with Facebook’s security team eventually got the majority of them taken down. According to the researchers, these groups were able to operate so freely due largely to the fact that “Facebook seems to rely on users to report these groups for illegal and illicit activities to curb any abuse.” So as long as no good Samaritans happened across them and turned them in, these groups were able to freely operate with small chances of repercussion.
