What tech will be instrumental in restoring Notre Dame?

Answer: Lasers.

On April 15, the historic landmark in Paris caught fire, causing extensive damage to its roof and toppling its iconic spire. Now that the flames have been extinguished comes the daunting task of rebuilding the 850-year-old cathedral, but modern technology is going to make that job easier.

In 2015, the late architectural historian Andrew Tallon used laser technology to create detailed 3-D scans of the entire cathedral inside and out. His work, detailed in a 2015 article by National Geographic, will be instrumental to rebuilding the cathedral as it once was.

The cathedral was under construction at the time of the fire, so some of the artworks and other historic artifacts normally kept there were already safely stored in another location. Additionally, the 400 firefighters who responded to the scene helped save many of the important objects still inside the cathedral.
