What is keeping American Idol going right now?

Answer: iPhones.

The popular singing contest, which airs on ABC, has been on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the show is scheduled to return to the air on April 26, with everyone including the contestants working remote.

But how do you film a live contest show when all the contestants are stuck at home? One word: iPhones. According to Business Insider, the 20 remaining contestants were sent “top of the range” iPhones to film their performances from home. They then sent the footage back to the show, where it will be edited and aired.

So far, the new system seems to be working well. American Idol showrunner Trish Kinane told Deadline Hollywood that she thought it wouldn’t be surprising if the show decided to continue using iPhones in the future after the crisis abates.
