Is Earth about to be hit by an asteroid?

Answer: No, but some scientists are going to pretend that it is.

This week, a number of international agencies will be participating in a tabletop scenario depicting a wayward asteroid striking the Earth. Those participating include NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) and more.

Experts from the participating agencies will convene in a conference that examines what would happen if astronomers detected an asteroid with a 1 in 100 chance of hitting our planet. While this exercise is not new, asteroid experts convene every two years to conduct similar exercises, this is the first time that real-time updates will be continually shared on social media.
