Can AI make people’s writing better?

Answer: Microsoft certainly seems to think so.

Move over, spell check, there’s a new writing tool in town.

Microsoft recently announced a new feature for Word online that will use AI to go one step further than spell check. Instead of just pointing out misspelled or misused words, “Ideas” will also present suggestions for how to improve your writing on a broader level.

Much like a glorified grammar checker, Ideas will use machine learning to discover and present better ways to write messy sentences. TechCrunch reports that it can also tell you how to make your writing more inclusive.

Ideas is a cloud-based AI, so it will only work with Microsoft Word Online. It will launch first for Office Insiders in June, with a general release slated for this fall.
