France is giving social media how long to delete illegal content?

Answer: One hour.

France on Wednesday passed a new law imposing strict rules, and subsequent fines for companies that break them, on social media platforms’ regulation of illegal content.

Per the new legislation, companies must remove highly problematic and illegal content such as child abuse and terrorism within one hour of being notified of it. If they fail to comply, they will be fined heavily, up to 1.25 million euros ($1.36 million) or 4 percent of their global revenue if they repeatedly offend.

The law also states that for other types of illegal or harmful content, such as hate speech, companies will be given 24 hours to remove it upon notice. These new regulations take effect on July 1.
