How many governments does it take to bust a $100M cybercrime ring?

Answer: Six, plus Europol and Eurojust.

The U.S., Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Germany, Bulgaria, and Europol and Eurojust (from the European Union) teamed up to bring down the cybercriminal network, announcing charges Thursday against 10 individuals.

The operation targeted more than 41,000 computers with GozNym malware to steal banking login credentials, mostly in the U.S. and associated with banks. Engadget reports that the total amount of money stolen is still unknown, but they were aiming at $100 million. Half of the 10 people charged were in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, with the other half operating in Russia.

This bust is significant not only because of the scale of the criminal operation, but also due to the “unprecedented” level of cooperation required on behalf of the various countries and law enforcement agencies involved.
