What might an AI name its pet cat?

Answer: Probably something like Sparky Buttons, or maybe Tom Glitter.

An artificial intelligence network was trained to generate names for kittens, and the results are equally confusing, entertaining, and even downright strange. While Whiskeridoo isn’t half bad, it’s not likely anyone will want to go for a kitten named Bones of the Master or Kill All Humans.

Researcher Janelle Shane, who previously brought us AI-generated cookie names, partnered with Morris Animal Refuge in Philadelphia to help them name some of their kitties up for adoption. Shane’s first neural network, trained on just 8,000 cat names, didn’t get very far with names like Hurler and Trickles. But her second iteration had a lot more context and when she fed it a list of names, it hit a little closer to the mark.

Some of the names that the refuge chose to use include Pompompur, Starmaker and Whiskeridoo. The full list is available on Shane’s website, and the refuge is taking suggestions for which ones to use next. Who knows, maybe these unique names could help these kitties find their new homes — it seems to have worked for Mr. Sinister at least.

It’s the 21st century, & we have adorable adoptable kittens & cats named by a neural net, thanks to @JanelleCShane. Check out Whiskeridoo, Starmaker, Sparky Buttons & friends at https://t.co/hEcaJaiJP0. Lots more names, too - tell us your favorites & we’ll use ‘em next.
