How is IKEA helping people adapt to small living spaces?

Answer: With robotic furniture.

At least that’s the future that IKEA is envisioning.

That’s why it’s partnered with robotic furniture startup Ori to bring us a new line of apartment furnishings. Dubbed ROGNAN, this new line will be designed to “empower people to have big dreams for small homes” by letting them literally put their furniture away when they don’t need it.

A rendering by IKEA shows a bed and couch on either side of a dividing wall. At the press of a button, the bed can slide itself underneath the couch, and the whole wall can be moved back and forth to optimize floor space on one side or the other. There’s also closet space and a retractable desk on the bed side of the wall. The entire setup requires only about 115 square feet of floor space.

IKEA has not yet revealed a release date for the ROGNAN line; however, the company is expected to release more information this summer.
