Where is Uber Eats going to start making drone deliveries?

Answer: San Diego.

Last year, San Diego was one of 10 locations chosen by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to participate in its Unmanned Aerial System Integration Pilot Program. This allows the city to test certain drone projects under circumstances that would otherwise violate the FAA’s UAV rules, such as flying beyond the pilot’s line of sight.

One of these projects will allow drones with Uber Eats, the ride-hailing company’s food delivery service, to deliver McDonald’s orders within the city. Beginning this summer, the drones will ferry orders to designated pick-up areas for Uber Eats drivers to collect and deliver to customers. While this means there won’t yet be any drones bringing your fries straight to your door, it could help allay the noise and privacy concerns that have arisen around residential drone deliveries.
