Can a cyberattack cause a beer shortage?

Answer: Possibly — Australia is about to find out.

This just goes to show that good cybersecurity is really, really important.

Lion, one of Australia’s largest beverage producers, announced June 10 that it had been hit with a cyberattack on Monday, June 8. The attack had significant repercussions, with the company forced to halt most of its operations including shutting down its breweries.

The attack was later confirmed to be a form of ransomware, and Lion hoped to have most if not all of its systems back online in just a few days. However, as of June 12 the company’s breweries were all still out of operation. In a news release, the company stated that it still had beer in stock and would be monitoring those amounts closely, but also warned that there could be some shortages before the issue was resolved.

On the bright side, Lion has found no evidence that any sensitive or personal information stored in its systems was compromised in the attack. So it looks like the only fear is that we might be a little short on Australian beer for a bit.
