Tech company Healthe has come up with a high-tech solution for combating the spread of germs, potentially including the novel coronavirus. Rather than having people put on hand sanitizer before entering a business or other public space, Healthe wants to just zap all the bacteria and viruses they might be carrying with ultraviolet light.

Healthe specializes in UVC light sanitation, creating products that can sanitize surfaces without the need for chemicals or human contact. Their “cleanse portals” can do that for people before they pass through a doorway. Using what’s known as “far-UVC” rays, which unlike typical UVC rays are not harmful to humans, the company claims that its doorway sanitizers can clean bacteria and viruses from skin, clothing and anything else that a person might have on them in 20 seconds.

According to Business Insider, it has yet to be determined if far-UVC rays are capable of killing the coronavirus. However, the Wall Street Journal reports that there is an upcoming research paper on the subject that states that 90 percent of coronaviruses could be removed from the air in about 8 minutes using far-UVC rays. So it looks like there may be a chance the technology could be used for that purpose in the future.
