What, besides data, is Facebook helping to collect?

Answer: Blood.

Facebook is out for blood in the U.S.

Blood donations, that is.

The social media giant last week announced the launch of its Blood Donations feature for U.S.-based users. In use in worldwide locations since 2017, Blood Donations will alert potential donors who have signed up when there is a need for blood in their area.

Facebook has partnered with organizations including America’s Blood Centers, the American Red Cross, Inova, New York Blood Center, Rock River Valley Blood Center, Stanford Blood Center, Versiti and Vitalant to facilitate the donations. Users will be able to respond to the requests for blood through the Blood Donations page, as well as using available tools to inspire their friends to donate as well.

The feature will first be available in Baltimore, Chicago, New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C., before rolling out nationwide at a later date.
