Are people out and about as much as they were pre-COVID-19?

Answer: No.

Despite many cities and states reopening after nationwide shelter-in-place orders, smartphone data shows that many residents are still reluctant to spend much time out and about.

Business Insider reports that Apple recently released anonymized, aggregated smartphone data on people’s mobility trends since the start of 2020. As expected, the data shows a significant drop in movement between March and the beginning of this month. However, despite the fact that states have reopened, the data indicates that many people are still unwilling to get out very much.

Public transit appears to have taken the biggest hit, with people opting to walk or take private vehicles when they venture outside. For the country as a whole, the number of people driving and walking has returned almost to pre-COVID levels, but the number of people taking public transit remains about 60 percent lower than before the virus struck.

All of the data is currently available on Apple’s website.
