Is AT&T forcing some customers to upgrade their phones?

Answer: Not exactly, but their recent email sure made it sound that way.

The middle of a pandemic is not the best time for AT&T to be, unintentionally, scaring its customers.

According to The Verge, the carrier recently sent an email to certain customers that was at the very least confusing and at the most concerning. So much so that many believed it to be a scam. But apparently it’s not — it’s a legitimate email warning customers with older phones that their devices won’t work on an upgraded network.

Some AT&T customers still use cellphones, like the third- and fourth-generation iPhone, that don’t can’t transmit calls over a 4G LTE network. This frightening-looking email seems to have been intended to warn those customers that, when AT&T upgrades its network for 5G by February 2022, their phones will no longer work because it will be phasing out 3G. But this information was apparently hidden lower down in the email and required a little digging to find, leading many customers to believe that their phones were going to stop working right now.

As of press time, AT&T had yet to comment on the incident.
