The project runs parallel to similar undertakings on the part of U.S. companies, one of which announced that it intends to build an island project off the Tahitian coast.
What do you get when you combine science with the fear of rising sea levels?
Answer: the potential for large-scale, man-made islands
That’s right, like a less grungy version of something out of the 1995 film Waterworld, Dutch researchers are reportedly working on a way to build giant islands for human habitation. The steadily melting icecaps, coupled with a healthy dose of climate change denial, just might make the project a must in the coming decades. CNN Tech reports that that the Dutch Maritime Institute recently tested the concept using scale modeling in a large basin of water to simulate currents, waves and winds.
