Epson today announced that it has developed a flight simulator for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using its augmented reality (AR) tech that allows you to fly a holographic drone rather than a physical one. By linking Epson’s Moverio AR glasses and DJI’s Mavic Pro drone, the glasses will display a hologram of the drone that you operate using its remote.
According to The Verge, the field of view is limited to 23 degrees, so you must be careful to keep track of the drone with your head while flying. There are also a few simple games included; you can fly through rings or pick up candy.
This tech has the potential to one day greatly improve the safety of recreational drone flight. After all, why risk flying your actual drone where it could hit a tree or building, when you can fly a virtual version that can’t hurt itself or anything it might run into?
