Who set out on a quest to circumnavigate the Earth today in 1577?

.

Answer:

Sir Francis Drake. Drake and his fleet of six ships left port in Plymouth, England. While crossing the Atlantic, Drake lost two ships and their crew. While anchored off Argentina, a third ship was lost to rotting wood. And finally, while sailing the Strait of Magellan at the tip of South America, Drake lost two more ships to damage, leaving only one ship, the Golden Hind, to complete the voyage, which it did on Sept. 26, 1580.
