How will you know when one of Volkswagen’s EVs is coming?

Answer: From the unique sound it makes.

Beginning September 2020, automakers selling new electric vehicles (EVs) in the U.S. will need to include noises that the cars make while driving, to inform pedestrians of their presence. While some EVs come with this feature now, they can be turned off by the driver, a function that will not be permitted come next year.

That’s why Volkswagen announced on Thursday the release of the unique sound that will come in all the company’s EVs in the future. Take a listen here. The sound was created by composer Leslie Mandoki, and the first car in Volkswagen’s lineup to get it will be the ID3 EV. It will play both inside and outside the car while it is moving at a speed of 19 mph or less, as well as when it is moving in reverse.

Unfortunately, the sound will not be heard in the U.S. anytime soon, as the ID3 will only be sold in European markets. But it is still headed for our roads and ears eventually, with plans to include it in the new ID Crozz all-electric crossover slated to enter the U.S. market late next year.
