Beware: This video is mesmerizing, both visually and because one can’t help but consider the environmental impacts of all those fires. There’s something chilling about being able to see on a global scale just how much everything was literally on fire this past year.

Thanks to the Copernicus Program from the European Union, we now have a video of satellite images taken day after day throughout the entirety of this year in which fires are highlighted as hot spots. Each day, the images show the fires’ radiative power per square meter as a yellowish/orangeish glow. The images appear one after another in a succession just quick enough that it is reminiscent of the actual flicker of flames. You can literally watch the fires dance around the globe.
