In March 2018, nonprofit New Story and construction company ICON teamed up to literally print houses. They developed a 3-D printer that could print an 800-square-foot home in just 24 hours, demoing it at a site in Austin, Texas. They announced that by the end of 2019, they wanted to begin printing homes in communities where residents lived in unsafe housing. And with just a few weeks to go until the end of the year, they’ve done just that.

The first two houses of a 3-D printed neighborhood in Tabasco, Mexico, are now move-in ready, with more on the way. New Story and ICON partnered with a local nonprofit, ÉCHALE, in order to build the neighborhood, the first of its kind in the world. When all is said and done, 50 local families living on less than $3 a day will be able to call these safe, affordable houses home.
