Answer: #SOPA

Anything Internet-related is bound to garner widespread attention and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) was no different. After 1.2 trillion searches conducted on Google in 2012, SOPA was named the world's No. 1 most searched hashtag on the search giant's zeitgeist list. While SOPA proponents believe it would protect intellectual property, opponents said the legislation threatens free speech. On Jan. 18, more than 7,000 websites including Wikipedia recognized Black Wednesday by limiting content in protest of SOPA. (Read GovTech's SOPA coverage).
