Why are users asking Alexa for the day instead of the time?

Answer: COVID reasons.

Remember all those jokes during coronavirus lockdown in the spring about how people were judging the passage of time by the day rather than by the hour? Turns out they really were more than just jokes, and Amazon’s Alexa has the data to prove it.

Amazon recently released the data that it has anonymously compiled on what users have been using their Echo smart speakers for in the last eight months. One of the biggest changes was to one of the most common questions that Alexa gets: Instead of “what time is it?” users started asking “what day is it?” Honestly, we all get it.

Amazon also reported an increase in streaming through Fire TV, mostly for virtual fitness and wellness classes. Between February and July, engagement on Peloton increased by 300 percent, while viewing of Headspace guided meditation sessions went up by 80 percent. The data also pointed to more consistent use of Amazon devices throughout the day due to more people working from home, and overall usage appears to have increased compared to before the pandemic.
