Why did Panasonic make a moody, farting cat robot?

Answer: To be an, er, interesting household companion.

Nicobo may not be the robot companion we wanted, but it just might be the one we deserve. Created by Panasonic in partnership with the Toyohashi University of Technology Michio Oka Laboratory, the robot looks like a cat that got stuck in a sock, and it has some unique features.

Nicobo is stationary, so it can’t follow you around the room like other companion robots, but it can rotate on the spot and blink and move its eyes fairly realistically. It can recognize your face through an onboard camera and has directional microphones and touch sensors so it can respond when you interact with it. What really sets Nicobo apart, though, is its personality.

According to Engadget, Nicobo can be a bit moody, sometimes hardly responding to you or even farting at you (no, really). And sometimes it will start talking even if you didn’t say anything to it, which normally is very creepy for technology to do, but in this instance is ... cute? Either way, this robot companion actually sounds more entertaining than most.
